Family OPtions

Option 1
Watch on FORMED
Francis: the Knight of Assisi  OR St. Francis of Assisi:His Life and Miracles
Families can choose a video to watch for an activity this month, depending on the age of their children. "Francis: the Knight of Assisi" is a 30 minute animated video that gives an overview of the calling and life of St. Francis of Assisi. It is appropriate for PreK to 6th grade. The second video, "St. Francis of Assisi: His Life and Works", is a docu-drama about St. Francis and his life, based on the writings of Brother Thomas Celano, a close friend of St. Francis.

We celebrate the life of this popular saint on October 4.
You will need to log into your account on FORMED in order to watch either video.
Homework: To submit watching one video as one of your activities for October, fill out the form below.

Option 2:
Faith, Family and Food: Cooking with the Liturgical Calendar

For our October liturgical meal, we travel to sunny Spain to learn more about another major Catholic saint, St. Teresa of Avila. St. Teresa is especially remembered for her efforts to reform the Carmelite order, and she also wrote The Interior Castle.  This work describes the journey of a soul moving through 7 interior rooms, through a life of prayer, service and contemplation.  It is considered to be one of the classics of Catholic spirituality.  We celebrate her feast day on October 15.
Homework: To submit making this meal as one of your monthly activities, take a photo of your family gathered around the table and send it to:  stcatherinehomework@gmail.com

The 30 minute podcast above was originally produced as part of the "Ave Maria Hour", a series on the Catholic faith created by the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. The series was produced by professional voice actors and ran from 1935 to 1969, with millions of listeners. Episodes are being rebroadcast today through new technology. https://www.atonementfriars.org/ave-maria-hour/

Option 3:
Pray together at your Family Prayer Space
October is the Month of the Rosary.  In fact, we honor Mary under the title "Our Lady of the Rosary" on October 7. Gather around your Family's Prayer Space and pray the rosary together.  There are resources to help you pray posted below. Set a family goal of praying the rosary together at least 4 times this month, to pray each of the sets of Mysteries.
Homework: Send a photo of the rosaries your family used this month around your Family Prayer Space to stcatherinehomework@gmail.com.

Option 4:
Attend the Drive-Through Blessing of the Animals on October 3, 9:30-10am
This year in honor of the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, we will host a no-contact, stay-in-your-car, blessing of your beloved pets! We are adapting this time-honored ritual to fit our current circumstances. Join us by driving into the West parking lot (the big parking lot, without the car shelter) before we begin at 9:30 a.m. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY.

There will be a very short prayer, which will be broadcast throughout the parking lot; then roll down your window and drive by Father as he blesses your pet with holy water – and you and your pet are back on the road to another year of love and friendship!
Homework: Send a picture of you and your pet(s) at the blessing to stcatherinehomework@gmail.com

Option 5
Visio Divina with St. Hildegards's vision of Creation
Picture
Visio Divina is the practice of "praying with your eyes." It is the "slow, thoughtful contemplation of a picture, photo, work of art, or really anything visual that invites God to speak to us in a deeper way." (www.bustedhalo.com) We know that we are constantly bombarded with all types of visual images.  Cultivating the practice of Visio Divina - in Latin "divine seeing" - can help us recognize and meditate on God's presence in and through images.

Homework: To submit this option as one of your Family Projects for October, please download and use the file "Seeing Creation through the Eyes of St. Hildegard" and then submit the form to the side.

Complete an additional workbook activity. DO NOT USE THE FLOURISH WEBSITE TO TURN IN END-OF-CHAPTER REVIEWS.

Students in grades 1-6 have additional activities available to them that coordinate with each workbook chapter.  To find them, log onto www.flourishkh.com, and go to your account.  Students can complete one of these activities (usually a one page worksheet) and turn it in as one of their monthly activities. Instructions for finding the activities are on the September page. Please remember, these worksheets are an optional activity.  They do not replace the Chapter Reviews in the workbooks.

Homework: To submit these extra activities as one of the monthly projects, you'll need to download, print out and complete the worksheet. When finished, you may scan it or take a picture of it and send it to stcatherinehomework.com, or place it in the RE Homework drop box outside of the Parish Center.
