family activities
This month, there are 4 options to choose from. Families can choose to learn more about Our Lady of Lourdes, make a tasty French meal, have your home candles blessed for Candlemas and reflect on the true meaning of Love.
Option 1: Watch on FORMED
We recall the apparition of Our Lady in Lourdes, France, to a young girl, Bernadette Soubirous, on February 11. This series of appearances to St. Bernadette culminated in the discovery of the healing spring that millions of people still visit each year. The cartoon video is for younger children. The movie, Bernadette, on the right, is for older students but can also be enjoyed by the whole family. It was shot on location in France and was chosen to be shown at the shrine in Lourdes.
Homework: Please fill out and submit the questions below.

Option 2: Faith, Family and Food - Cooking with the Liturgical Calendar
Take a culinary trip to France to remember the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes by making this fairly simple, yet tasty dinner of baked French onion chicken with salad, French bread and a baked apple and pear dessert, known as "Flognarde".
Homework: To submit this option as one of your Family Activities, send a picture of your family making or gathered around the table, eating together to [email protected].

Option 3: Learn more about the True Meaning of Love
This option has two-steps: First, talk about the true meaning of Love on St. Valentine's Day, using the the Scripture quote from 1 Corinthians - "Love is Patient." The full quote is in the file "Love is patient" below. Hang the Scripture quote in your Prayer Space, with other symbols you may associate with love (hearts, saints, photos of loved ones, etc.)
Then, work through the "What is Love?" worksheet (below) and talk about the true meaning of Love. This worksheet is fairly long, so you may want to break it into two days.
Homework: To submit this option for this month, take a picture of your Prayer Space with the St. Valentine's Day heart and send it to [email protected]

Option 4: Celebrate Candlemas
We celebrate Candlemas on February 2 each year, to commemorate the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. Since Jesus is the Light of the world, we remember this feast day by bringing the candles that we will use in our homes during the year into church, where they will receive a special blessing. St. Catherine's will offer a blessing for the candles at each Mass the Sunday BEFORE Candlemas (January 30), as well as on Wednesday, February 2, at the noon Mass. Choose a couple of candles you will use at home and bring them with you to Mass. When you light the candle during the year, recall how Jesus Christ is the Light.
