What will we do for re this year?
Welcome to Faith Formation 2020-21!
This year, Faith Formation for children and youth will be a partnership between the parish and families. Instead of either “in person” or “online,” it will be a unique collaboration with two parts. Keep reading to learn more, and then click here to register!
Part One will be based on our theme for the year: Living Leisurely through the Liturgical Year. Each month, parents and children/youth will choose two of the activities recommended by the parish for an opportunity to dig deeper into the liturgical year. These activities range from cooking together at home to watching a video or reading a chapter in a book. Check out our Summer 2020 Fun page for an idea of the type of activities. We will publish the options for each month on this website. Families will need to fill out an online form or send us a picture of the completed activity. These activities will act as "attendance" credits.
Part Two will be an age-level workbook for children and parents to complete during the course of the year. For almost twenty years, St. Catherine’s has worked to move more and more to an inter-generational, family-based experience of faith formation (religious education). This year offers us a unique opportunity to use the best of our resources and experience to grow and deepen our faith as a community. Please note, this year ALL WORKBOOK HOMEWORK MUST BE PHYSICALLY TURNED INTO THE RE DROPBOX OUTSIDE OF JOHNSON HALL. We are not accepting online homework for the workbook this year.
Q&A
Will there be any online classes for children in grades PK – 6? No. Our experience is that online classes for children this young are difficult to make interesting. Also, they will likely be doing some of this for school, and we do not want to overload them with screen time, especially as the weekly recommendations for screen time set by education agencies is only 180 minutes per week. Please see below for the monthly Homework Due Date Calendar for children in grades 1 - 6. Homework calendars for children and youth in other grades and programs can be found on the specific pages for those classes. Click Menu in the upper left corner to find those pages.
Will there be any online classes for youth in grades 7 – 12? Yes. Youth in these grades will be expected to participate in two online classes each month. These will be focused on youth ministry-type topics.
What about First Communion and Confirmation? We will provide specific materials and expectations for children and youth preparing for First Communion and Confirmation. Please go to the this page for more information on First Reconciliation and First Communion and this page for more information on Confirmation.
